Open Question: What's the best way to clear an overgrown area for planting?

A portion of my backyard is overgrown with weeds, tall grasses(?), clover, etc... I'd like to clear it and plant grass to extend the lawn. Probably a few trees and garden as well. I plan to do the clearing this year and planting either this fall, if possible, or next year. What is the best way to clear the "field" and get it ready for planting? How can I prevent weeds, etc... from taking over before planting/seeding or once grass or other plants and trees are seeded but before they begin to grow?

Open Question: What wild American plant smells like licorice?

I'm trying to identify this plant in my yard. When dug up, the roots smell strongly of licorice. The leaves fan out into a pretty, flat shape and later in the year long narrow black seeds develop. I'm in Ohio. It has small white flowers, though not right now.

Open Question: what website would give the best wisteria advice?

I have a lovely 40-50 year old vine in my back yard that has over grown a trellis and I need information on proper cut back/trimming. I know they are very delicate and hard to grow so I would hate to kill such a lovely plant that shares the long history with our home. Any advice is greatly appreciated!
